THE NIGHTINGALE’S AUBADE

Dashed crimson slits

branded into tender flesh;

his heated blade reaches bone

as he carves his name

into her spine.

She drinks starlight for breakfast.

Tans in the moonlight to hide

blistered lips with melanated vaseline.

She cakes rouge over her bloody cheeks.

It is a different shade of red.

Scarlet droplets shine white

in the gleam of sunshine

from the east-facing window.

Laced curtains flutter in the breeze,

laughing.

Morning comes, relentless. He smiles.

Sinew stains her sheets,

creasing the silk

between her legs.
